Yu Garden (豫园) Shanghai: A Garden Complex Nearly 500 Years Old
Shanghai is not only about The Bund, nor is it only about lavish streets; Shanghai is also home to Yu Garden (豫园), a garden complex nearly 500 years old spanning up to 20,000 m2 right in the heart of Shanghai.
Yu Garden is a vast garden built in ancient Chinese architectural style, located next to the City God Temple in Shanghai's Old Town.
In 1559, Pan Yunduan, an official during the Ming Dynasty, built Yu Garden as a peaceful retreat for his father's retirement, and it became the largest and most famous garden in Shanghai at that time.
Enduring nearly 500 years and witnessing many historical ups and downs along with this city, Yu Garden is considered an invaluable treasure of magnificent Shanghai.
Today, a great number of tourists visit this place to rediscover a piece of the city's history.
If you travel to Shanghai, remember to visit this spot; it serves as a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of China's most luxurious city.
