SCP-343 "God": the all-powerful being who stays in his cell by choice
Among the thousands of chilling SCP Foundation files there is one entity that unsettles even the most seasoned researchers in an unusual way: not because it is dangerous, but because it is so utterly gentle. This is SCP-343, a calm man who calls himself "God" — and the most frightening thing is that no one can prove he is lying.
What is SCP-343?
SCP-343, nicknamed "God", is an entity in the form of a middle-aged man who appears to be omnipotent yet is extremely mild and good-humoured. He claims to be the creator, "God" in the full religious sense. Strangely, his appearance changes with the observer: every staff member sees a different face and a different ethnicity, as though he reflects the beliefs of whoever is in front of him.
Object class: Safe
In the SCP Foundation classification system, the Safe class does not mean harmless; it refers to objects that can be contained easily and pose no risk when left alone. SCP-343 is rated Safe for a thoroughly paradoxical reason: no measure whatsoever can confine him. He can walk through walls, vanish at will, and is immune to every physical restraint. He is "safe" simply because he chooses to stay.
Containment procedures
The containment procedure for SCP-343 is almost a joke as far as the Foundation is concerned. He is given a room of 5 by 5 by 5 metres, decorated exactly to his own taste. The Foundation provides him with meals, although he does not need to eat to exist.
- SCP-343 is free to move about the area if he wishes.
- Every camera and recording device fails when pointed at his face — the image shows only a blinding halo of light where the face should be.
- No guards, no locks, no weapons are needed. Because if SCP-343 wanted to leave, nothing in the world could stop him.
Description and the chilling story
What makes the SCP-343 file haunting is not cruelty but what he refuses to reveal. When researchers ask about the origin of the universe, the nature of the other SCPs, or whether he really is the creator, SCP-343 only smiles and deflects. He performs small "miracles" — healing wounds, making objects appear out of nothing — but always declines any grand display of power to "prove" anything.
Asked why an omnipotent being would sit quietly in a cramped room, SCP-343 answers that he is there of his own free will, because he wants to observe humanity and keep it company. It is that calm which produces the shiver: if he really is God, then the containing walls are an illusion — and the one who is "locked up" is in fact quietly watching all of us.
