SCP-3000 Anantashesha: the vast eel in the Bay of Bengal and the amnestic compound Y-909

Deep beneath the black water of the Bay of Bengal, something hundreds of kilometres long lies coiled in the dark. It has no beginning and no end, and one direct look at it leaves your mind forever changed. This is SCP-3000, also called Anantashesha — one of the most frightening and mysterious objects in the entire SCP Foundation archive.

What is SCP-3000?

SCP-3000 is an enormous creature shaped like an eel or a sea serpent, living at the bottom of the Bay of Bengal off the coast of India. Its length is estimated at hundreds of kilometres, its body coiled into countless interlocking loops. The name Anantashesha is drawn from Ananta Shesha in Hindu mythology — the endless serpent that supports the universe.

What makes SCP-3000 terrifying is not its size but the psychological effect it produces. Anyone who sees it, in person or in an image, falls into a state of horrifying hallucination, loses orientation and gradually loses their mind. Many staff who came into contact with it went mad or took their own lives.

Object class: Thaumiel

SCP-3000 is rated Thaumiel — one of the rarest and most secret classifications in SCP Foundation. Unlike Safe, Euclid or Keter (which describe how hard something is to contain), the Thaumiel class is for objects the organisation itself uses to restrain or counter other anomalies. In other words, for all its danger, SCP-3000 is a tool the Foundation cannot do without.

Containment procedures

Containing SCP-3000 is all but impossible in the usual sense, since no one can move or confine a creature that long. Instead the Foundation set up a secret maritime exclusion zone around the Bay of Bengal, disguised as a military testing area. Specialist teams are sent in to harvest a valuable compound from its body.

• Compound Y-909 is extracted directly from SCP-3000's body fluids.
• Y-909 is the main ingredient in the amnestics on which the whole SCP Foundation depends.
• Without Y-909 the Foundation could not erase witnesses' memories, and its entire secret operation would collapse.

Description and the chilling story

The SCP-3000 file is told through fragmented journal entries by a team of staff trapped beneath the sea. The deeper they go into the creature's body to harvest Y-909, the further it works its way into their minds. The entries grow panicked and broken, full of images of something "looking back at them out of the dark".

The most chilling part is the suggestion that Anantashesha itself may be manipulating human perception on a global scale — and no one can be sure that what they remember is really their own memory, rather than what the creature wants them to believe. SCP-3000 is not simply confined; it exists right at the edge of the reality humanity still takes for safe.
