SCP-2000 Deus Ex Machina: the machine that rebuilds humanity after the end of the world

SCP-2000

Imagine that one day the whole of humanity is wiped out — nuclear war, a pandemic, or some nameless catastrophe. Yet a few months later everything is as though nothing had happened. People go to work, city lights stay on, and no one remembers that the world once ended. Behind that chilling miracle stands SCP-2000the Miracle Machine, also known as Deus Ex Machina.

What is SCP-2000?

SCP-2000 is an enormous facility complex buried deep beneath Washington D.C. in the United States. According to the SCP Foundation file, it is not a monster or an ordinary supernatural phenomenon but a machine — a factory for regenerating life on an unimaginable scale. It has a single function: when human civilisation collapses entirely, the Miracle Machine starts up, brings people back and rebuilds the whole world from the ashes.

Object class: Thaumiel

What makes SCP-2000 special is its classification: Thaumiel. In the SCP Foundation system most objects fall into Safe, Euclid or Keter according to how dangerous they are. But Thaumiel is an extremely rare class — for objects the Foundation itself uses to contain, counter or prevent other objects and end-of-the-world scenarios. In other words, Thaumiel is humanity's "last line of defence". Their very existence is classified at the highest level of secrecy.

Containment procedures

SCP-2000 is maintained in a permanent state of readiness, hidden underground and continuously supplied with power. Only a handful of senior Foundation personnel know its true location.

  • The facility must always be stocked with enough genetic material and human data to be ready to run.
  • When an end-of-the-world (XK-class) scenario occurs, the machine activates automatically or is started manually.
  • After the rebuild, the witnesses and the new humanity alike are treated with amnestics so that no one remembers a "restart" ever took place.

Description and the chilling story

Inside SCP-2000 are countless enormous cloning chambers capable of producing complete adult humans in a matter of days, implanting them with stored memories, identities and knowledge. The machine can also manufacture tools and documents, and even rebuild structures, to "patch" history so that the revived world looks exactly as it did before.

And here is the most chilling detail: if the machine has ever been activated, no one alive could possibly know. Our memories may be implanted. The history we learn may be a reconstruction. Humanity may well have been erased and reborn many times already — and right now you may be living in a version of the world made by Deus Ex Machina without having the faintest idea.

Note: SCP-2000 "the Miracle Machine" is a work of fiction belonging to the SCP Foundation community writing project (creepypasta/collaborative fiction). All of the content is for entertainment and is not real.
