SCP-1499 The Gas Mask: the mask that sends its wearer to a deadly planet full of creatures
In the vast archives of SCP Foundation there are objects so harmless-looking that you might glance past them without a second thought. SCP-1499 is one of them: just a worn Soviet-era gas mask. But if you are foolish enough to put it on, the familiar world around you dissolves in an instant, and you open your eyes in a place no creature of Earth would ever want to set foot.
What is SCP-1499?
SCP-1499, nicknamed "The Gas Mask", is a Soviet-made GP-5 military gas mask, entirely ordinary in appearance and worn with age. Its single anomaly only shows itself when someone puts it on: the moment the mask seals against the face, the wearer vanishes from their present location and is transported to a place designated SCP-1499-1.
SCP-1499-1 is an alien planet, dark and barren, its air thick and its visibility smothered by opaque fog. It is no place for human beings, and more frightening than the deathly landscape are the things that live there.
Object class: Safe
SCP-1499 is rated Object Class: Safe. Many people take "Safe" to mean the object is safe, but in the SCP Foundation classification system the class only means the anomaly can be controlled and neutralised easily when it is not activated. With SCP-1499, as long as no one wears the mask it lies there like an ordinary object. "Safe" is no guarantee of harmlessness for anyone who does put it on.
Containment procedures
According to the containment file, SCP-1499 is stored in a locked secure case in the storage area for Safe-class objects. The main rules include:
- No individual may wear SCP-1499 without prior approval.
- All testing is carried out only with Class-D subjects under close supervision.
- Test participants must be trained to remove the mask as quickly as possible in order to return.
The way back is simple enough: take the mask off and the wearer is immediately returned to their original position on Earth. The trouble is that over there, you do not always get the chance to take it off.
Description and the chilling story
The land of SCP-1499-1 is home to entities designated SCP-1499-2: unnaturally tall humanoid creatures with long, disproportionate limbs, moving in jerky steps that are disturbing to watch. They tend to be hostile and gather in growing numbers around any wearer who appears.
In the test logs, many Class-D subjects describe terrifying scenes: being surrounded by a crowd of grotesque creatures, strange sounds echoing through the fog, and the feeling of dozens of unseen eyes following them. Some managed to tear the mask off in panic and escape; in other cases, no return was ever recorded.
Note: SCP-1499 and the whole SCP Foundation universe are collectively written fiction (collaborative fiction / creepypasta) produced by a community on an open wiki platform. This is purely imagined horror and is not real. If you enjoy mysterious, extraordinary and strange stories like this one, keep following this section to discover more anomalous files.
