SCP-914 - The Clockworks: the gear-driven machine that "refines" anything you dare feed it

Among the thousands of classified SCP Foundation files, few objects carry a "safe" classification and still make the skin crawl the way SCP-914 does. It is an enormous machine of gears that can "refine" almost anything you dare put inside it — and hand back a result no one can predict. People call it by a name at once poetic and menacing: The Clockworks.

What is SCP-914?

SCP-914 is a massive mechanical device weighing several tonnes, made up of countless interlocking gears, springs, pulleys, mainsprings and spindles. The strangest part: no power source has ever been found, and physically those gears cannot generate enough work to do what the machine does. It has two chambers — an "Intake" booth and an "Output" booth — along with a large crank for winding it and a brass dial with five preset settings.

The operation sounds suspiciously simple: place an object in the intake booth, choose a refinement setting, wind the crank and wait. When the machine stops, the original object has vanished from the intake booth and something "new" has appeared in the output booth.

The five refinement settings

• Rough: violently destroys and tears the object apart.
• Coarse: takes the object apart into its constituent components.
• 1:1: produces an object of equivalent complexity or value.
• Fine: upgrades it into a more valuable and more complex version.
• Very Fine: yields the most refined result — and the least predictable, sometimes anomalous in itself.

Object class: Safe

In the SCP Foundation system, the Safe class does not mean "harmless". It only indicates that the object can be reliably controlled and neutralised — shut it away and leave it alone and it will sit still. SCP-914 only works when someone actively operates it, so it is rated Safe. But as every staff member knows, "safe" here just means dangerous the moment you act.

Containment procedures

SCP-914 is kept in a dedicated containment chamber. Every object to be refined must be approved in advance by a superior. Placing living creatures or body parts in the intake booth is forbidden without high-level authorisation, after several experiments on test subjects produced appalling results. Personnel are absolutely forbidden to step inside while the machine is being wound.

Description and the chilling story

What makes The Clockworks so haunting is the sense that it "understands" what it is transforming. A broken watch set to Fine may come back whole and keeping perfect time. But a living creature fed in at Rough comes out as shredded tissue, and at Very Fine returns in a shape so distorted it cannot be named. No one knows by what logic those silent gears "refine". Documents record other anomalous objects being fed into SCP-914, and the results handed back were sometimes more dangerous than the originals. The machine passes no judgement; it simply turns coldly, clicking away, and hands you the price of your curiosity.
