SCP-527 Mr. Fish: the man with the giant parrotfish head

Imagine walking into an ordinary room where a man sits in a shirt, reading a newspaper and telling a charming joke — except that in place of a human face he has an enormous parrotfish head, thick-lipped, its blank eyes looking straight at you. This is SCP-527, the entity the SCP Foundation community affectionately calls "Mr. Fish" or Mr. Fish.

What is SCP-527?

SCP-527 is an adult man with an entirely normal human body but the head of an enormous parrotfish (parrotfish/wrasse). He can speak, read, write and go about daily life like anyone else, with only slight difficulty in pronunciation because of the shape of the fish mouth. Strangely, despite the fish head, SCP-527 breathes air like an ordinary person and needs no water at all to live.

"Mr. Fish" is known for being friendly, funny and extremely cooperative. He jokes constantly, especially about fish and the sea, which leaves SCP Foundation staff both wary of him and fond of him.

Object class: Safe

In the SCP Foundation classification system, Object Class: Safe means an entity can be contained easily and poses no active danger as long as procedures are followed. "Safe" does not mean absolutely harmless; it means easy to control. SCP-527 is rated Safe because he has no capacity to cause harm, offers no resistance and readily cooperates with every research request.

Containment procedures

Because of his gentle nature, SCP-527 is given a standard living area much like staff quarters, fully furnished. He is allowed access to books and newspapers and ordinary food, and is treated with respect.

• His head must not be submerged: paradoxically, despite the fish head, SCP-527 will drown if held under water, exactly like a human being.
• His diet is entirely ordinary; no aquatic food is required.
• All interviews and research are conducted with his voluntary consent.

Description and the chilling story

What makes SCP-527 haunting is not ferocity but an unnerving ordinariness. Mr. Fish behaves, thinks and feels exactly like a person; only the head cannot possibly be human. When he laughs at a joke, the fish lips move, the gills flutter, and the flat round eyes do not change expression at all — an effect that is funny and spine-chilling at once.

SCP-527 himself seems not to remember how he came to be this way, and shows no distress about his appearance. It is precisely that calm acceptance, together with light-hearted jokes about his "relatives under the sea", that leaves listeners with an unease they cannot name: inside that fish head, is there still a whole human being?
