In the darkest archive of the most secretive organisation on the planet there is a file that makes even the hardest staff shudder when it is mentioned. It is SCP-3199 - nicknamed Humans, Refuted. They are not people and not animals, but something between the two worlds: creatures that once wore human shape and absolutely refuse to accept the extinction of their kind.

What is SCP-3199?

SCP-3199 is the designation the SCP Foundation gave to a species of gaunt, skeletal humanoid creatures whose pale hairless skin recalls plucked fledgling birds. Their bodies are elongated, their limbs spindly, their movements jerky, and they emit an incessant high-pitched shrieking. According to the documentation, they are held to be an aberrant evolutionary branch split off from humanity - a version of ourselves that chose a different path to survival, more horrifying than anything the imagination could build.

Classification: Keter

SCP-3199 carries Object Class: Keter - the most dangerous classification in the Foundation's system. An object is classed Keter when it is extremely difficult to contain, capable of causing catastrophe if it escapes, and when current restraint measures are only temporary. With SCP-3199, the threat lies not merely in physical strength but in the way they reproduce: every escaped individual can turn a living creature into a breeding vessel, letting their numbers explode beyond control.

Containment procedures

SCP-3199 individuals are held in separate soundproofed cells at a high-security site. The procedures require:

• Each cell holds one individual only, with all contact between them prevented.
• No living creature may be brought within the containment area, including personnel, unless fully equipped with protective gear.
• Continuous audio monitoring, since their shrieking is believed to serve for communication and location.
• Any individual showing signs of preparing to reproduce must be neutralised immediately.

The description and the horror of the story

What makes Humans, Refuted a genuine nightmare is the way they perpetuate their kind. SCP-3199 do not give birth naturally. Instead they hunt down and subdue a living creature - usually a human or a large animal - then force a still-twitching embryonic mass into the victim's mouth and make them swallow it. That living mass parasitises the host's body, developing in silence and draining the life from it, until a new SCP-3199 tears its way out.

This is where their name comes from. SCP-3199 embodies a will to survive distorted to its very limit: a species that would rather turn others into cradles for its offspring than accept a final full stop. They refuse extinction at any price - even when that price is the existence of all humanity.
