SCP-055 The Unknowable Object: the antimeme that erases itself from your memory
Try to imagine something that exists right in front of you, but the moment you look away, your mind wipes out every trace of it. You cannot remember its colour, its shape, or even that you just saw something at all. This is SCP-055, also called The Unknowable Object (The Unknowable Object) in the SCP Foundation universe — an anomaly that unsettles people not because it is gruesome, but because it makes your own mind betray you.
What is SCP-055?
SCP-055 is described as an "antimeme" — a kind of information that resists being remembered and spread. Unlike an ordinary "meme" (something that tends to be remembered and shared), an antimeme erases itself from awareness. No one who has ever seen SCP-055 can recall what it looked like, what it was made of, or even whether it is a physical object at all.
The strangest part is that Foundation researchers can only record what SCP-055 is not. They know for certain, for instance, that "it is not spherical" and "it is not red", because these negative notes are somehow retained. But every direct description, every positive attribute, vanishes from memory at once.
Object class: Keter
SCP-055 is classified Object Class: Keter — the most dangerous class in the SCP Foundation system. A Keter anomaly is extremely hard to contain and hold, and capable of causing catastrophe if it slips out of control. With SCP-055 the danger lies not in physical destructive power but in the fact that its antimemetic nature makes monitoring nearly impossible: how do you guard something whose existence you keep forgetting?
Containment procedures
To cope with this permanent forgetting, the Foundation applies a special containment procedure:
- SCP-055 is kept in a sealed cell, and personnel must carry out periodic checks to confirm that the cell is still intact.
- An automatic reminder system keeps sending notifications to staff, forcing them to note that "there is something" that needs containing, lest they forget the assignment entirely.
- Every observation must be written down in negative form and filed immediately, before the memory has time to dissolve.
Description and the chilling story
What makes SCP-055 haunting is the question with no answer: if no one can remember it, how do we know it really exists? Scattered notes in the file hint at more frightening possibilities — that SCP-055 may be moving, may be watching us, or may even have escaped once without anyone noticing in time. The most chilling feeling is not seeing a monster; it is knowing that something dangerous is right here, and that your own brain is hiding it from you.
Some theories hold that this "unknowable" nature is the perfect defence mechanism: an anomaly you cannot properly fear, because you cannot hold it in your head long enough to be afraid.
Note: SCP-055 and the whole of SCP Foundation are an internet community writing project (collaborative fiction / creepypasta). Every character, anomaly and "file" is a product of imagination and is not real. This article was written for entertainment and to explore the mysterious world of SCP.
