MH370: Satellite Data, Debris, and the 2026 Search
MH370 did not vanish from all systems in a single moment. After losing air traffic control contact on March 8, 2014, military radar and automated "handshakes" with a satellite showed the Boeing 777 flew for more than six hours. Those low-data signals shifted the search to the southern Indian Ocean.
The flight left Kuala Lumpur for Beijing with 239 people. The transponder stopped transmitting, and the aircraft diverted across the Malay Peninsula and out to sea. Inmarsat did not send GPS positions; the system recorded timing and frequency offset of the connection, from which experts constructed distance arcs and tested possible flight paths.

What is the seventh arc?
Each handshake indicated the aircraft was somewhere on a large circle around the satellite. Time sequences, fuel, speed, and Doppler eliminated many flight paths. The final log-on created the ‗seventh arc,‘ considered to be near where the aircraft ended its journey.
Errors also stem from unknown altitude, speed, autopilot modes, and fuel dynamics. A small change pushes the assumed impact point by dozens of kilometers. The search strip is a product of probability, not a coordinate line that can be traced once.
What does the debris confirm?
A flaperon found on R union in 2015 was confirmed to belong to MH370; many other pieces on the East African coast and islands were confirmed or assessed as almost certain. They show the aircraft ended in the Indian Ocean and provide drift data.
The debris does not reveal the cause or the person in control. Marine growth, discovery time, wind, and ocean currents help with modeling, but each piece has its own history. They reinforce a broad area near the southern part of the arc, rather than creating a single sinking point.
Why can a wide scan still miss it?
The ATSB and its partners mapped approximately 120,000 km until 2017; Ocean Infinity searched further in 2018. The seabed is thousands of meters deep, with underwater mountains, steep canyons, and sediment. Terrain shadows, sonar quality, and vehicle limitations can leave gaps.

The 2025–2026 Search
Malaysia signed a ‘no find, no fee’ contract with Ocean Infinity in March 2025 for a new 15,000 km area. Operations through January 2026 yielded no confirmed findings. In June 2026, the government granted a one-year extension to complete the remaining approximately 7,428.54 km .
Therefore, saying the search ‘ended permanently’ in early 2026 is outdated; saying ‘MH370 has been found’ is also incorrect. As of the editing date, the program is permitted to continue when weather is suitable, but the location of the wreckage remains undetermined.
What cannot yet be concluded
The Malaysian report did not determine the final cause. The diversion does not appear to be a simple autopilot malfunction, but missing data does not allow for criminal attribution. Any hypothesis must explain all radar, satellite, and flight time data, not just a single detail.
Searching is a multi-layered data problem
The priority zone was created by overlaying flight paths based on satellites, aircraft performance, fuel exhaustion points, descent simulations, and debris drift models. Each layer has its own uncertainty. If assumptions about the final hour change, the high-probability area also shifts; this is why independent groups may propose different coordinates despite using the same records.
Reviewing old data is as important as collecting new data. The ATSB once asked Geoscience Australia to review sonar images to ensure targets were not misclassified. Machine learning can assist in shape detection, but complex geology creates many false positives and humans must still verify.
Responsibility when reporting on MH370
This is the disappearance of 239 people with families still waiting for answers. A compelling hypothesis should not be presented as a verdict without flight recorders, a main crash site, or a chain of evidence. Search updates need specific dates because contract status and operational seasons change.
How to distinguish facts from speculation
A strong fact requires records from near the time of occurrence, physical evidence with clear provenance, or multiple independent measurements. Late accounts, details appearing only in popular books, and unverified images are ranked lower. ‘Not fully explained’ does not mean all hypotheses have equal value.
The article prioritizes scenarios that simultaneously explain multiple traces with fewer assumptions, while keeping the unknowns clear. If a new discovery emerges, the first questions should be who confirmed it, what the identification method was, and whether the data has been released for independent verification.
