SCP-250 - The Dinosaur Skeleton: the Allosaurus fossil that moves and lunges at people

SCP-250

In the vast archives of SCP Foundation there are objects that destroy no cities and bend no reality, yet still raise the hair on your neck for one simple reason: they should have been dead for millions of years. SCP-250, familiarly called The Dinosaur Skeleton, is one of them. A fossil skeleton that looks entirely inert, and yet can move and lunge to bite anyone who comes too close.

What is SCP-250?

SCP-250 is the nearly complete fossil skeleton of an Allosaurus — a carnivorous dinosaur of the late Jurassic. The anomaly lies not in its appearance but in its behaviour: when a living creature, especially a human, comes within close range, the skeleton suddenly "wakes", articulates its joints and tries to attack. No muscle, no tendon, no brain — and yet every vertebra works in concert, as though an unseen force were driving them.

Object class: Safe

In the SCP Foundation system, the Safe class does not mean the object is "harmless". It simply indicates that the object can be readily controlled and contained by known measures, or becomes harmless when not triggered. SCP-250 is rated Safe for exactly that reason: as long as no one approaches, the skeleton lies as still as any museum specimen. Its danger is limited by its own slowness and its fragile structure.

Containment procedures

The Foundation keeps SCP-250 in a warehouse with an isolating barrier, maintaining a safe distance between the object and any walkway people use. A few core rules are usually recorded:

  • No member of staff may step inside the activation radius without a clear assignment and supervision.
  • Because the skeleton is fossilised it is very brittle and easily broken, so any approach must be extremely careful to avoid damaging the specimen.
  • Taking advantage of its extremely slow movement, personnel can easily withdraw out of reach when necessary.

Description and the chilling story

Imagine standing in a dark warehouse, sallow light falling across the tall dinosaur skeleton. You take another step. Then another. Suddenly the heavy skull tilts slightly towards you, the fossil jaws open with the dry sound of bone scraping bone. The whole frame shudders, the limbs begin to drag forward — slowly, but with unmistakable predatory intent.

Fortunately, the weaknesses of SCP-250 are what save people. It moves so slowly that an ordinary walking pace easily leaves it behind. Its bones, turned to stone over millions of years, are extremely brittle — one hard knock is enough to send pieces falling away. The ancient predatory instinct is still there, but the body betrayed it long ago. The apex hunter of the Jurassic is now only a rattling ghost, full of hunger and quite powerless.

Note: SCP-250 - The Dinosaur Skeleton is a work of fiction belonging to the SCP Foundation community writing project (creepypasta / collaborative fiction). Every detail in this article is a product of imagination and is not real. Enjoy it as an entertaining horror story and do not worry too much — the dinosaur skeletons in museums will go on standing exactly as they always have.
