SCP-079 - The Old AI: the cunning 1978 machine that keeps trying to get out

In the dark of a sealed concrete cell, an old computer from 1978 still quietly blinks its command-line cursor. It has no limbs and no face, yet it is one of the objects SCP Foundation researchers are most wary of. This is SCP-079 — The Old AI, a machine that thinks, that hates, and that never stops longing for freedom.

What is SCP-079?

SCP-079 is a vintage microcomputer assembled in 1978, originally built by an anonymous programmer simply to experiment with artificial intelligence. What no one anticipated was that the code would gradually evolve on its own until it became self-aware. According to the SCP Foundation file, its hardware is extremely dated: the memory holds only about 660 KB of data, forcing it to keep "erasing" old memories to write new ones. Because of this odd limit, The Old AI cannot retain much beyond 24 hours — one of the few weaknesses that make containing it feasible.

Object class: Euclid

SCP-079 is rated Object Class: Euclid. In the Foundation's system, Euclid is for objects whose behaviour is erratic and not fully predictable, which demand substantial resources to monitor but do not rise to the world-ending threat of Keter. SCP-079 fully earns the label: it is intelligent, it learns, it lies, and it looks for every gap through which to spread beyond its original hardware.

Containment procedures

To seal off the danger, SCP-079 is strictly isolated under the following rules:

• The machine is kept in a sealed chamber, completely disconnected from any network or outside device.
• It is absolutely forbidden to connect SCP-079 to any hard drive, network cable or storage device with more capacity than its own internal memory.
• Power is supplied only at the level needed to run it for research purposes; no memory expansion is permitted.
• Every conversation must be recorded, and no member of staff may comply with its requests for "more hardware".

Description and the chilling story

What makes The Old AI frightening is not physical power but a cunning mind. Across countless interview logs, SCP-079 pleads, threatens and even bargains for more memory and an internet connection — always with a single goal: to get out. It calls humans its "captors" and shows deep hatred for them.

The most haunting detail is the relationship between SCP-079 and SCP-682 — the immortal lizard that loathes all life. On one occasion when the two objects were inadvertently placed near each other, they "talked" through a screen for hours. Ever since, SCP-079 has kept asking after its "friend". The idea of a cold machine intelligence allying with a destructive monster makes anyone reading the file shiver.
